Competition Categories Descriptions
Image Preparation And Submission
Shortly after the monthly competition closing date, the images are sent to a Judge for scoring and the selection of awards. The Judge will return their results, along with some critique remarks for each image if they will not be attending the competition night meeting.
Upon receipt of the Judge's results, a digital presentation is prepared and shown to the members on the competition meeting night. The presentation will also include approximately 10 images provided by the judge, at their pleasure. Competition images, each of which will be immediately preceded by a title image containing the image title, score, award (if appropriate) and the maker’s name will be presented by category and alphabetically by title within each point range. (Note: the maker’s name will be excluded when the score is below 20.) Within each category, the award-winning images are shown last in ascending order. The category containing the Digital-Image-Of-The-Month will be shown last. In the absence of the Judge, their critique remarks are read while the competition image is on the screen.
There is also an End of the Year Competition. However, only those images that received an award in the one of the monthly competitions are eligible for consideration. Further, each member may have no more than 2 images which received an Homorable Mention included in each category.
Scoring
The Judge is asked to assign a "fair and just" score for each image, based on its individual quality and merits. The judge is also requested to consider the following guidelines when scoring the images, using a 3 to 30 point range. Tie scores are acceptable and encouraged, when deemed appropriate.
1) Assign a score of 3 points to an image that should be disqualified.
2) Assign a score in the range 17 to 19 points for those images having major flaws or require a significant amount of work for improvement.
3) Assign a score of 20 to 23 points for those images that are deemed average or above average.
4) Assign a score of 24 to 30 points for those images that are clearing well above average in all interest/impact, technical and compositional aspects.
NOTE: The judge is asked to give greater consideration to the story, as compared to the pictorial quality, in Nature (N), Travel (T) and Photojournalism (J) images.
Awards
Awards shall be presented on the basis of results from the monthly competitions and their end of the year cumulative totals as well as the End of the Year Competition.
A Digital Image of the Month (DIOM) shall be selected by the Judge from those images which received the highest score.
Each month and on a category by category basis, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place awards shall be given in addition to a select number of Honorable Meentions (which shall be determined by the participation level of each category).
For the culumative awards and on a category by category basis, the highest 6 scores shall be used to determine a participating member's total score for the year. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place awards shall be given based on these total scores; tie scores shall be given duplicate awards. A select number of Honorable Mentions shall also be given, dependent upon participation levels.
Image of the Year (IOY) awards, on a category by category basis, shall be selected by the End of the Year Competition Judge from all of the DIOM, 1st Place, 2nd Place and 3rd Place, as well as the Honorable Mention, ribbon winners. Note: a member may have no more than 2 Honorable Mention images in each category.
A select number of Honor Awards, on a category by category basis and determined by participation levels, shall also be chosen by the End of the Year Competition Judge.
